Notes: beep does what you'd expect: it beeps. But unlike printf("\a"), beep allows you to control pitch, duration, repetitions, etc. Its job is to live inside shell/perl scripts and allow more granularity than one has otherwise. It is controlled completely through command line options. It's not supposed to be complex, and it isn't - but it makes system monitoring (or whatever else it gets hacked onto) that much more informative.

To date, I've heard of beep specifically being used:

In a guitar tuning program (xtune, I think)
In LIcq and XChat scripts to play special sequences for specific people
As a network connectivity monitor a la: ping -i 60 | beep -s
As a music player
As a morse code generator
As an alarm for an IDS like portsentry, e.g. tail -f /var/log/messages | grep attackalert | beep -s
Signalling distributed.net RC5 block completion

as well as myriad unnamed systems-monitoring tasks. All from a little 4k program.
