Zephyr is an instant notification service developed in the late 1980's at MIT. While is is not as widespread as IRC, ICQ, etc., it is more secure than any of the larger IM services due to its use of Kerberos. It is used in production at several dozen sites across the Internet. At MIT, it is used by several thousand users sending several million messages a day using Unix, Windows, and Mac OS clients.
