Notes:

GNU nano is a GPL clone of UofW's Pico editor, included in the Pine package. Both Pico and Pine suck, and more importantly, are non-free stuff. nano is an effort to provide a close clone, while adding new features and fixing some buggy behaviour in the original. Some highlights are regexp searches, internationalization support, text highlighting...
nano is an official GNU package.
