G.H.O.S.T. is a Host Observing System Tool.

G.H.O.S.T. is a Java/C/SNMP-based tool for hierarchical adaptive distributed system-level diagnosis for local area networks (LANs), mainly Ethernet ones.

In other words, we can say that G.H.O.S.T. stands for "Get Host" or "Get Host Status". These two defitions introduce G.H.O.S.T.'s main purpose: network diagnosis.
