Notes:

I am a current MIT student, a SIPB member, and an Athena-dev employee.

My current project with Athena-dev is to bring in GNOME to create a user experience that is commensurate with the quality of the underlying Athena computing environment. This basically involves tweaking GNOME to play nice with AFS and the locker model of software distribution, and kicking its build system til it works with ours.

In the long term I have two large projects that I am going to do in my copious free time, unless someone else beats me to it:

  • A Quality Package Manager Right now there are a half dozen systems out there for managing software distribution. They all have their problems, some of them have interesting features that are worth stealing. This is most likely to happen in the event that I stay around MIT looking for a Masters degree in CS.
  • Release Athena For those who are have never used the system it built, Project Athena is a research project ended years ago that brought forth X and Kerberos, and maybe a few other things. Here at MIT, however, Athena is a system for remotely administring hundreds of UNIX workstations, and one that works better than anything else I have seen. The problem with the Athena project was that it researched, designed and implemented, but never released. As the world comes back to UNIX, and as schools, especially public school in poorer nations, begin to bring in computers, they are going to need something like the Athena system, because while hardware is cheap, people are expensive. Athena allows you to get the most out of your people.
