cpw regarding xfree86 4.0:

I've been using it (and beta 3.9.x versions) for about a year now and haven't had any problems with virtual consoles. I compiled and installed it myself on my debian system. It's probably not an xfree86 problem. Mandrake's setup might not enable your VCs at your current "start using X" runlevel. The VESA DDC support is the entire reason I'm using 4.0 on my home machine. I never could figure out proper 3.3.x modelines for 1600x1200x85Hz but the DDC support does it beautifully!

Tip of the day! Never stab your thumb with kitchen scissors while trying to remove the foil from a bottle of Sherry. On the other hand it is kinda eery looking into a super clean cut on my thumb that doesn't really hurt and isn't bleeding much... yuck.
