Notes: Well, here's my open source street creds, such as they are:

  • I'm the Helix Community coordinator for RealNetworks.
  • svg2swf - Converts an SVG file into a Macromedia Flash (.swf) file.
  • I wrote a small Perl script that was featured in the Perl Journal, describing how to perform Condorcet elections.
  • I run a very active mailing list discussing election methods. What does this have to do with free software? Well, things like the Debian project would have a much tougher time without a solid voting system (they have the state of the art), and improving the state of the art is a Good Thing(tm).
  • RTSP -- Protocol for on-demand streaming media. I was co-editor and RealNetworks' representative during the process of moving this to an IETF Proposed Standard
  • SMIL -- XML-based markup language for composing synchronized multimedia presentations, allowing authors to choreograph the playback of audio (MP3, RealAudio, .au, .wav), video (RealVideo, H.261, Quicktime, AVI), and images (PNG, GIF, JPEG) into a coherent multimedia presentation. I was one of many people on the working group that created it.

Went to OSCON last week. Got sick. Not sure if the two were related. ;-)

Actually, things went really well. Based on discussions there, I'm messing around with our SMIL implementation to come up with a good export format for OpenOffice Impress.

I spent the better part of today analyzing the last Debian project leader results. Very interesting. Martin Michlmayr won a Condorcet-tallied election in a very close race between him, Bdale Garbee (the incumbent), and Branden Robinson. Looking at the analysis, probably the most surprising observation is that Branden Robinson would have won had San Francisco's rules for Instant Runoff Voting been used. The full details are over on my posting on Electorama.

I'm at the IETF meeting in Japan this week. Other than the typhoon, it's going well. Unfortunately, I have to leave early. Those that are interested in what's going on can actually watch the MPEG-4 feeds.

Been playing around with RSS stuff today. After much searching for a CSS stylesheet for RSS, found the W3C RSS Stylesheet which makes the W3C RSS Feed look pretty good in Mozilla. I borrowed it for the rtsp.org RSS feed. Also, suggested that the Mailman developers add RSS support to Mailman
