Yeeesh. Trips long. Finally finished conference season, returning from the O'Reilly Perl Conference. It was fun. Lots of things to think about and listen to. My How To Be Really Cool Using MacPerl talk seemed to go well. I was awarded a White Camel, which was nifty.

I need to do a lot of catching up this week, with Perl News and with Slashcode. Fun fun fun. Then there are my other projects, including MacPerl, and keeping up to date with Perl 6 and other developments. Sigh. :-)

Leavin' for yapc tomorrow (the 20th). Yaaaaay.

I am right now trying to copy all the files off a messed up CD-ROM. Ack, Taking forever for the reads and re-reads, on a 2x drive, the only thing I have that will read it, copying over the network ... sigh.

I am driving to yapc 19100 on Tuesday with jjohn and {KM}. My Saturn LS2 will be wired. The PowerBook will have be powered with a car adapter, providing DVD movies and PlayStation games. I'll have my Palm Vx and OmniSky for wireless IRC, ssh, web, mail. Mmmmm, cooooool. And CMU is totally wireless; from what I understand, they have the largest wireless network of its kind. 802.11 everywhere, so I can use my PowerBook + WaveLAN all over campus.

And I have I mentioned that oznoid rocks? He set up yapc. He is a serious stud.

I got my Omnisky modem this week. Very cool.

They said I needed Windows to install it. I just installed the 1.3MB .prc file I found and it worked. Now my Palm Vx has wireless TCP/IP from virtuall anywhere in the country (except for, of course, my house, where cell access sucks).

I used Top Gun ssh to get to my home box where I then went out to EFNet. IRC from anywhere. OK, maybe this isn't such a good thing. But it is quite cool.

Aha. use Perl is now live. It is a discussion and news and issue forum based on the Slash code, for Perl.

I meant to get to work on some of the MacPerl 5.6 porting/testing stuff this weekend. But I relaxed a lot instead, worked around the house, and used our new BBQ. A Weber Genesis Silver C. I'll work on MacPerl this week.

I got Slashcode moved over to the same place Slashdot is. Now I need to get use Perl moved over there, too.

I'd really like to find a correspondent who is going on Perl Whirl to report back for me for Perl News.

We finally got the all-new Slashdot up. Hopefully, the only differences people will notice are a few fixed bugs and much faster servers, though the code went through some major changes.

I've spent the last week, and will spend the next week and some of the week after that, working on a code merge of Slashdot to the Slash code, and a move of Slashdot to new servers. Kinda slows down development when you do this stuff, but it is necessary. I just hope the users of Slash on the Slashcode site don't get too annoyed at the lack of development and activity over this time. I've explained the situation and haven't seen any real grumbling.

I got my wife an iBook and get to turn her old iMac into a Linux box. I love AirPort (a.k.a. WaveLAN). The PowerBook and iBook are wireless (we are both sitting on the couch watching baseball and "surfing" right now from our respective wireless portable computers), and the others are on the LAN directly, all going through to a Surfboard cable modem thingy. Ain't technology great?

My Power Mac 7100/66, the first (post-C64) computer I programmed on and my router, died. Bad power supply. I went to eBay and found one, and was the high bidder. The guy who was selling it used to be on the MacPerl list, where I am an active contributor, and so he gave me free shipping on the power supply. :-D

I started a new Perl site today, use Perl. It will be "live" sometime soon. It's basically going to be a Slashdot for Perl, but without the lame comments.
