I just got a Compaq Aero 3135 handheld PDA on closeout for a mere $150 after rebate. 200 MHz StrongARM processor, audio in and out, pocket sized, and it runs Linux! Some further comments about it are here.

Notes:
I was the first full-time staff member of the Free Software Foundation and wrote the GNU C preprocessor "CCCP" (C Compatible Compiler Preprocessor), co-wrote the first version of the GNU Awk interpreter "gawk", published the first printed edition of the GNU Emacs Manual, contributed to X11R1 at the MIT Athena project, and various similar stuff. These days I'm mostly interested in cryptography and privacy. I implemented the cryptography in Nautilus, a voice cryptography program (have private voice conversations by modem or internet, even with a slow connection) which is distributed at no charge in source form, though not currently under a true free software license (I hope that will change). I also did the first RSAREF integration into PGP, though it's since been re- done differently for license-related reasons.
In the past year, I haven't written much free software, though I've contributed a few bug fixes to the Apache JServ module. I've been doing some hacking with mod_ssl and might release some extensions for it soon, but nothing earth shattering. On Usenet I often hang out on sci.crypt (cryptography) and sometimes comp.infosystems .www.servers.unix (Apache-related stuff).

Damn. I was hoping to go to HAL but looks like I'm going to have to bag it. Didn't arrange the air ticket soon enough, too much going on at work, etc. Oh well. There's a crypto conference later in August that I'll try to go to instead. It would be stupid to go to both.
It used to be, that you had to book domestic (U.S.) flights weeks in advance, because airlines like to gouge last- minute business travellers; but international flights didn't have that problem nearly as much. That seems to have changed recently. Sigh.

New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.
