Notes: Formerly a developer, now a corporate technology wonk. What have I done in OS? Nothing. That's why I'm here -- to figure out why I would want to.
Contributor or founder? Contributing to an ongoing project is simplest, so I went looking for possibilities. Dia is a possibility, but I'm not comfortable with the code (too much of an STL-wonk, I imagine). So, it looks like maybe I'll found something.
Filed an article response on the topic of OpenSource vs. Capitalism. Find it here.
So, what is with OpenSource? It just doesn't make sense to me. My code is my work, my art. Did Mozart give away his music (yes, but he sold a fair bit of it as well). Did Degá paint only for the greater good? (No, but he did that too.)
What I like about OS is the unstructured organization. The ability to work on what is interesting, difficult, and on my whim. It is the democratization of software development.
I don't like that it pressures me (if not forces) to release my work gratis. Is that a misconception? In order to free myself from the rigid confines of tranditional corporate structure, do I need to deny the value of my work?
I intend to find out. I intend to experiment here.
