I was very interested by this thread; the concept I feel is a great one and far from impractical. In fact I would go so far as to say that such a wireless network is enevitable as moblie computing and communications expand. The idea of a self organising dynamicly routing wireless network has been around for some time. I first remember hearing of such a concept in the 1970's in Australia. At the time there was debate over the plans for the Australian wireless telephone system. One of the proposals (By a German scientist whom I can't recall) was for a peer-to- peer network of transcievers owned by the subscribers, with only some inter-state and deadspot stations owned by the government. The idea was rejected in favour of a monopoly utillity to sell network services to passive subscribers; in the same way power and water are (mis)handled.
The concept of a self owned and organicaly growing network has never quite left Australia, as there are currently quite a few networks, of exactly the nature Radagast outlined, operating successfuly.
