Notes:

I hack on Gnumeric - improving Excel import/export, polishing the GUI, and other stuff. I've made smaller contributions to other parts of Gnome, and to mutt and gnus.

By day, I'm a developer at Uninett, which provides internet services to the universities and collges in Norway.

On the personal level, I'm happily married to a fellow hacker. We've got two kids (5, 7) who don't hack yet. But they both know how to tell lilo to boot into Windows to play games (baah!).

At 44, I belong to the fairly small geezer brigade in Gnome.

We live in Trondheim, Norway. There is no better place when the whether is good in May, and there's almost no night. But pitch dark November does get you down.

If you want an international news source, check out Guardian Weekly (British, for those of you who don't already know). Personally, I'm right-leaning, so I find the left-leaning slant an interesting corrective.

Iraq crisis irritations

  • People who say "it's all about oil".
  • Ill-informed Americans like mglazer, who forget that the U.S. has never beaten anyone stronger than Mexico without allies.
  • Fellow Europeans who use anti-Americanism as a socially acceptable way to express xenophobia.
Hmm. the tone of the above didn't come out quite right. I'm sorry about that. It's a serious matter which deserves serious consideration.
dyork: One year olds and computers are indeed a problem. We got hold of one of those noise reducing enclosures which nobody seems to use any more, and secured the lid with a refrigerator door childproofing thingy.

You could also disconnect the power and reset buttons from the motherboard. You will still be able to shut down the computer from software.

The verdict in the 'DVD Jon' DeCSS case came in today. This headline in the local paper Aftenposten says it all: 'DVD Jon' scores huge legal victory.

He was found 'not guilty' on all counts. Here's a link to the Aftenposten article in English

salmoni Why OpenOffice won't load: Your Gnome session manager probably thinks applications which fail to start in 15 seconds are caught in an endless loop, and aborts them. 15 seconds used to be the default, but recent distributions use a longer value to give OpenOffice time to start. I use gnome-session --purge-delay=300000. That's milliseconds.

On my system, OpenOffice would invariably be aborted the first time I tried to start it, but next time everything was in memory, so it was able to finish in time.

Here's the bug report

Am I right in thinking that anyone wanting sane tooltips using GTK is to be expected to 'reuse' the code from gnumeric?

There are plans to extract generally useful bits from gnumeric, evolution etc. to a new library. If you want the changes to go into gtk, you could write to gtk-devel-list@redhat.com.
