I edited old jounral entries today... I mean I havn't used this since I was in college, but I now understand the importance of web blogs, what you do and don't say, and how all of history is caught on sites like Google and the way back machine... edited out things I wouldn't want people to see me say, killed all references to Caldera... and on top of it all... don't plan on using Advogato much anymore (I just stick to the mailing lists these days), but don't see a simple way of deregistering...

cheers
chris

p.s. I think it's both terrible and delightful to change history like this...

LOL, I don't use Advogato as often as I used to... I just
looked at my last diary entry and thought it was funny. To
follow up on the entry, I made it through and obtained my
Computer Science degree, and now I'm a researcher at the
Institute for Security Technology Studies... I really really
like my job, they pay me to research computer security
issues... I feel very fortunate...

I find it a little disheartening how many people seem to
support the Open Source Movement in favor of the Free
Software Movement... It should be all about a software users
freedoms, and the responsibilities we as programmers have to
give the user all the information possible. If you were
having a house built, wouldn't you want to be entitled to
the archetectural design? Would you ever hire a layer that
wouldn't show you his track records? Would you trust a car
that didn't publish it's specs? "oh yeah I drive an XYZ, I
have no idea how many Cylinders it has, or anything about
the transmission, and I guess there is some sort of
suspension, well they tell me I need to put gas in it"...

Only 2 more month til my CSI degree is official... I have some nice (gnu/linux) job offers lined up... I slept 2 hours
last night and now I'm back at school... I think these last 2 months might kill me...

I havn't written in my diary entry in a while but something
prompted me to...

I'm really sick of people questioning Linus' position and
power!!!

Yes Linus is powerful and influential to gnu/linux, but can
we all remember this is HIS kernel. He was nice enough to
embrace the hacker spirit and let us all get involved. IBM
and Compaq do not need to use his kernel, they can develop
their own non gnu/linux kernel. How could people even say he
should give way to a committee? Kernel developement has been
excellent and 2.4 in some ways is revolutionary. Committes
are slow, bloated and filled with political clout... Linus
is an excellent engineer and a great leader. I for one would
just like to thank him for sharing.

LinuxWorldExpo was amazing... I would even say Life
Changing.

Ran into the guys over at LinuxWizardry, and
they are creating some great stuff. Thier Magic VPN
gateway, is the same thing my company, BroadConnect, is
creating... so we decided not to re-invent the wheel, and
we are getting out of the hardware market and into the
Consulting Market (which we have a great deal more
experience in anyway)...

I'm happy with the moderate success of LinuxLock... but I am
unhappy with the Web in general... it's such a bad way to
transmit things. I think LinuxLock should be completely
ported to an XML style, and have Apps use the data...
dunno, a little foggy, but the ideas are kicking around up
there...

LinuxLock.Org is
not getting the hits we used to... we still have a small
base of readers... and those readers make it worth it to
keep the site going (not to mention I like running the
site, and would still do it if we had zero readers)...

Feedback would be nice though... things people could tell
me to make it a better site... I've had a few offers for
people to buy it, and they said they could promote it and
generate hits, but I like the idea of keeping the site
FREE, no banner ads, no profits...

I would also like to make it a place where others in the
community can post articles they write, or ask questions...

Any feedback from the community would be really helpful,
I want to make it OUR site, commercial free...

Work is going well... I'm having a lot of fun with
IPSEC, I feel like the whole internet should be IPSEC
enabled... I only want to look at websites that I can
connect to using IPSEC... that would be nice...

Had a meeting today with a company that is going to do our
website... 5points
does really great work... plus the President was a geek...
I like working with other geeks... the meeting went good, I
have confidence in them... gnu/linux rules...

Wow did my day turn around... I turn from a good meeting, to
wondering how I"m gonna pay my bills... it's not that I got
fired (still am employed)... just something else very
strange happened... my investment just got more
expensive...

I really like my website LinuxLock.Org, I enjoy
posting stories, and discussions I sometimes have with
members of the gnu/linux community because of it... I just
wish it was more of a community site... I wish more people
used the discussion feature on the story like people do on
Kuro5hin

I also wish I would get some feedback on what would be
really cool on the site, or even community security projects
LinuxLock should get involved in...

eh... I still love the site every time I go to it...

Wow, 2001 is here already... I was talking with the girl I
love about 2000. We decided 2000, was soo much fun... it's
funny cause I said, man we had so much fun together this
year, and she said , "Yeah but it was all such a blur cause
we were fucked up all the time"... welp, we do like to
party.

So here comes the new year... and hopefully lots of success
for my new company, thus success for my life.

Jenn is going to Germany for 3 months in March... I hope
she has an excellent time. That is really exciting for her

We've got lots to look forward to in the GNU/Linux
world... for one IBM is pledging $1 billion to us... that
is a lot of money. Look how far gnu/linux has come with so
little money, imagine what it will do with some iron behind
it.

Good luck to Eazel and HelixCode, I'm counting on you
guys to have a really nice desktop in place by 2002.
