I've moved on from Escala to found my own company with my old
colleague Alun ap Rhisiart (ex-Object People): Amarinda.

Hey! I re-discovered how you post diary entries on this site. It's not the most intuitive interface ever....

An update: I've been working for quite a few months in my new job for Escala. I mostly do Extreme Programming training and consultancy with some EJB and Java training.

Work on Kew progresses slowly but surely. I still have loads to do before it is a generally usable language, but you can at least write non-trivial programs with it.

And finally, I finished my PhD last year and am now a Doctor. About time.

Well, now you know how patchy my diary entries were as a
child. When I'm rich and famous and I publish the "Duncan
Diaries" (catchy title, no?) they are going to make very
light reading indeed.

Lots has happened lately. I no longer work for my old
employer. In fact, I no longer work for anyone. I've been
spending my time over the last couple of weeks working on my
programming language: Kew. It works
now, and is shaping up nicely. It is a container-based
object-oriented language which borrows heavily from
Smalltalk and Scheme. It is based on Glib and C and is
intended to be purely event-driven. It should be easy to
embed in most Glib-based software and hopefully will
continue to have a small footprint.

Well, it has been some time since I've had much to with the
internet, unfortunately. The move down to my parents' place
went well, but being stuck on the end of a 33K modem has
been hellish. I was used to the luxury of T1.

Most things are still on hold, including my promise to help
out a little bit on the `luis' project, and getting some
materials together to launch `open design'. In fact, at the
moment I am having second thoughts about this.

I have been offered a nice job at a company where they
actually work a 40-hour week. If I decide to accept it, I
will have a lot more hacking time than I have been used
to.... Tempting.

Life has been very hectic indeed.

I finally got that call concerning the house that I've
been waiting for all this time, and so I must move out and
go back to London. I've been granted an extra week, but
this is still only about 10 days notice to move all my stuff
200 miles. Given my position with my PhD write-up this is
an awkward problem. It remains to be seen how well I will
be able to work from my parents' place, and how much I will
be able to get finished before I am forced into taking a
job.

Currently, therefore, everything but my PhD and the
minimum amount of work I need to do to prepare my OT2000 conference session
on emergent properties is on hold. This is a shame, because
I am really looking forward to getting some materials online
for the open design project.
