Older blog entries for daverd (starting at number 2)

Well, I'm back at college now, which means that I have a high-speed internet connection instead of the 56k dialup I was using at home. Hopefully now I will resume work on my several projects.

I have a few complaints about the design of this website. Hopefully, someone high up in the chain of command will read this and take notice.

a) The bar at the bottom, [ Home | Articles | Account | People | Projects ], is not very exhaustive. For example, in order to create this new diary entry, I had to go into Account (?) and then click on the Diary link. Again, in order to look at my publicly accessable page, I must go into the Account section. This isn't very intuitive. Frequently accessed pages should have their own quick-link in that bar.

b) I think there should be more ranks besides the basic three, maybe something lower than Apprentice. I have seen many accounts where I didn't think the person had quite earned Apprenticehood, having no projects or diary entries. But, Observer status is ambiguous between "I haven't checked out this person" and "I don't think this person deserves Apprenticehood." There should be something to discern between those two cases. Also, I noticed an account created that is just an advertisement for a porn site. Maybe an "Illegitimate" rank could be used?

c) There seems to be no contact information for the people in charge of this website. I would have just emailed them about some potential changes, but I couldn't find their email addresses.

As always, just my two cents.

Well, I set up my advogato account, and I must say, this seems like a pretty cool concept for a website. Medieval England knew what was up; hierarchical guild systems are the way to go.

New Advogato Features

New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.
