Older blog entries for bytesplit (starting at number 48)

Last night I tried installing Debian from the 32+MB ISO I burned to a cd. I don't think the installation went all the well. For starters I had no clue what partitions I should make and how big to make them. The only ones I thought were needed were, /, /boot, /swap and /usr. For some reason I couldn't install the packages from the Internet, apparently the NIC wasn't recognized. In fact I don't recall being given the opportunity to tell the Debian installation about my NIC. Hmm. I am calling out to the other Debian users here to give me some pointers in setting up Debian (partition sizes and names, packages). Here is what I intend to do with Debian for a while on my 13+gig HD:

  • Chat on IRC and with other chat clients
  • Serve web pages (PHP, CGI, Perl) to the public
  • Write C and C++ and Perl software for Windows and *Nix
  • Gateway for home networked machines
  • Update documentation, man pages, etc.

You know, LSchiere? The problem I have is not so much the harshness of some of the advice or suggestions given to me by some of the members of advogato, as it is that I can't help but to think that nearly every darn time someone offers me "friendly advice" that he or she is merely prefacing their support of ChipX86 without ever thinking that I just might be "right".

I don't think that too many folks would accept suggestions such as "you should leave" or "you should apologize to everyone" as friendly or stemming from innocence.

To say that I mistake friendly advice for friendship is too vague a statement. That piece of advice could be applicable to anyone here. I did not say there were a lot of folks on here who are my friends, and perhaps very few of us here really have any true friends that reside on this site. Still, there are some here who are definitely in support of me, and I feel happy for them that they won't allow themselves to be instigated to the degree that I have.

Now, if people could just leave this whole mess alone and not make any further comments to me or the community about it (likely further prompting defensiveness from me), then perhaps I could get back to focusing on working with technology and trying to be a part of the team here.

I don't like the fighting and bickering any more than you do, and it pains me to say that I do not have the "gift of gab" verbally or grammatically speaking, to the point that I feel I can tread through these dark and cold waters without soliciting any serious shark bites.

So, I would strongly prefer to focus on technology and for the rest of the community to do likewise. This is my formal asking of everyone to drop this whole thing and not comment on it any further. I really don't think that anything further needs to be said by anyone on this manner. It will make my nights of sleep easier, and allow me to get back to more important things. Thank you.

furthermore, perrier, i am respectful to the folks here that are respectful to me. and that is a fact. i do have friends here, and there is no need to support that claim by naming names. if you treat people as some here have done to me, then it only makes sense that you will see some obscene ranting. but, all that doesn't make you an angel, either. you have done your share of instigating, along with tk, and LSchiere, chipx86 and a few others. so, until you all can stop responding to me in the manner in which you do, and rather respond to my comments about technology in general, then you are no better of a person.

just because someone is on an IRC server longer and belongs to a site like advogato longer, does not with any reason qualify that person as being exempt from having committed an act of slander such as chipx86 did when he posted my pic without permission on his site, along with posting a piece on here meant to poke fun at me and twist the truth. if any of you disagree with i am saying then i will no longer respond to you and will consider anything further that you say to be utter bullshit. so, LSchiere and Perrier, use some logic and maturity yourself before going off the wall to protect a contributor to the open source community from allegations of what you KNOW was an act of indesency. i really am ashamed of some of you, the inability to be impartial.

right now i am torn between spending my time getting intimate with 'C', THEN learning how to link my programs with a graphic library, OR just doing this thing in PHP where i have a bad feeling i will waste too much time fiddling with HTML. i've no doubt that i can do this program with 'C', i'm just worried about not having found much in the way of websites concerning various graphic libraries.

chipx86, you are by far the most immature individual i have met online. and, that's four plus years of an online existance i have had. how sad. you are the one who needs to apologize to me. then, you should apologize to the rest of advogato. why should you apologize to me? because you knowingly violated my privacy and stole my photo off my site. that is a no no. why should you apologize to the rest of the advogato? because you started this whole mess on here. you were the first one to post an article here about what you claim is a stalker following you, when rather it is the law that just about caught up to you. leave this crap to rest, okay?!? no more of it! you clearly are trying to instigate me, and are doing a very good job of it. honestly, i'd love to not have to read your diary entries anymore when i come here to read the good things that a lot of people have posted here. i really don't want any further contact with you. no chats. no emails. nothing. i am beginning to picture you as the stalker. just leave me alone, okay?

tk, would you care to point me to some websites about graphic libraries that can be linked to 'C'? hehe, everyone here knows that i am on Windows. can i write 'C' applications with GUI's? otherwise, i don't know how i would be able preview images before they are processed from the console. thanks.

Since I don't know Perl that well, am weak on C, can't do anything with C++ at the moment (other than a very simple Class and some objects), it looks like PHP will be the program that I use to write something that I really need: "Thumbelizer".

What I need is to be able to browse for an image, make a thumbnail of that image, then move that image and thumbnail to a new location. I started working a coding system to represent the various categories that my photos would fall under. I think I'll go with a one or two characters, add the date the photos were taken, then possibly have a number representing the number that particular photo is out of all the photos of the category in which that photo represents. This would make it easy to search for all like photos.

Well, we just got back from our trip. We were searching for the church that the minister, who will handling the sermon and other parts of marrying a couple, does her Sunday sermons. Along the way I thought I'd take a gozillion pictures of nature.

Since this is our first digital camera, we're having problems with the quality of pics taken with little lighting. Pics in a dark room or outside when the sun goes down don't turn out well at all. How does one get around this? But a more expensive camera? I don't see a connection spot for a flash, so I'm not sure what my options are.

For years I have wanted to take pics of nature and the people who live away from the cities. Thankfully my fiance bought me a camera for Father's Day :)

salmoni, wouldn't it just be better to not mention a person's name if you don't wish to get into a debate involving that person? Or, is that just another one of those "Let me get my stabs in while I can" type deals? And, saying the debate is between one person and everyone else is definitely not the way to quell the fire, so to speak.
