I used to have a rant on my web page about why I hated network switches, which was constantly sparking geeky conversations beginning with ``but switches are faster!''

Well, now that L3 switches are obtainable on a budget, I've withdrawn my objection, bought an Extreme Alpine 3808 on eBay, and written an even bigger multipage hyperrant about their quirks, unique capabilities, and inevitability. If you'd like to know about flow switching vs. route caching vs. longest-prefix matching, about the relationship between switched DRAM on some PeeCee motherboards and DOCSIS's tiny upload speeds, or about what recent changes to TCP have to do with L3 switching, have a look at my rant.
