To (innocent simpleminded) Reader:

Stupidity, selfishness, error and sin Belabor our bodies and prey on our minds, And we lovingly feed our regrets and remorse As verminous mendicants nurture their lice.

Our sins are ingrained, our repentances lax; We exact for confessions a handsome reward, And we blithely return to the path through the mire, Expecting cheap tears to wash out all our stains.

On the pillow of evil it's Satan Thrice Great Who constantly cradles our spirit enthralled, And the metal, the strong tempered steel of our will By that masterful chemist is turned into dust.

When we move, it's the Devil who's pulling the strings! In the most loathsome things we discover some charm; Every day we descend one more step toward Hell Through a darkness that stinks, without horror or qualm.

Like an indigent lecher who kisses and bits The martyrized breast of an elderly whore, We casually steal some clandestine delight, Which we squeeze very hard like a shriveled old orange.

Packed tightly and swarming like millions of worms, A host of foul Demons carouse in our brains, And whenever we breathe, Death flows down to our lungs, An invisible river, with dull, hollow moans.
