First day of UDS done

The first day of the UDS for Hardy is now done. I written up a little writeup on the Fridge about the first day: Developer Summit Day 1 concludes. I have also written something about FOSSCamp last weekend, which I attended. It too can be found on the Fridge: FOSSCamp wraps up.

See you all tomorrow. I might even remember to set my alarm this morning.

10 Rocking Features in 10 Days

I just finished writing a series of articles on 10 rocking features in 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) the Fridge. So as we wait for the final release of 7.10, take a peek at the cool features we will be getting.

On PackageKit

Og, PackageKit is a very cool project and I think it would make a great addition to 8.10. Why 8.10? Because 8.04 is our next LTS and introducing new ways to handle packaging is a very bad idea, IMHO.

However, I suggest you create a spec and suggest it for the next UDS and let's see what the real developers say.

Hey Mozilla, please care about Linux

For all the good Mozilla has done for the web, one thing that really irks me is how they apparently couldn't care less about Linux. Another classic example of this: Alex Faaborg talks about how "system integration" is so important for Mozilla. Notice the conspicuous lack of mention of Linux.

Webkit + Epiphany looks better every day.

One more day of OpenStreetMap Mapping Party in Victoria

By popular demand, the OSM mapping party has added another day, tomorrow, at the end of F0SS4G 2007. If you are interested in learning more about how OSM works and are in Victoria, drop by Dolce Vita coffee on 1213 Douglas St. tomorrow at 3:30pm.

So you're going to see less of me now...

As some of you already know, I am now a student again and this means I pretty much just gave up my free time. Specifically, it is all going into a Geography degree at Camosun College, with the eventual plan for a Masters in Urban Planning, hopefully at McGill University in Montreal.

What does this mean for Ubuntu?

I plan on giving up some of things I do for Ubuntu. I will remain on the CC and will help out with Marketing Team when I can.

So what do you need people to help you out with?

  • Leadership of Ubuntu Canada
  • Admining the following mailing lists: ubuntu-users, ubuntu-devel-discuss, and ubuntu-directory

If you want to help me with any of these, please mail me

Some resources are already accounted for:

  • The ubuntu-news and ubuntu-marketing mailing will be run by those capable and awesome UWN people, Martin Albisetti and Nick Ali.
  • The ubuntu.ca (or ubuntu-ca.org) website will land in the capable hands of my brother, Brian Burger (although he doesn't know this yet). And yes, I know it is down, my router powercycled and I lost my IP.

In general, my response time will probably get even worse (if that is possible) and I will likely not be on IRC much.

Back

Brian and I are now back in Canada. Yay for tonnes of bills, student loans, etc. to sort out.

In other news, this weekend is the Victoria OSM mapping party. See you there.

Giving an OpenStreetMap talk in Cape Town

I am giving a talk about OpenStreetMap at the Cape Town LUG on Sept. 11. You can see more details on the Cape Town LUG wiki. Hope to see you there.

OpenStreetMap 1 : Google 0

Seems that a good volunteer can produce better maps than the commercial providers. Take a look at Boggomsbaai, the holiday town I was in last weekend:

And then take a look at George, the town I am currently staying in. I have almost mapped more just with the drive in yesterday than all of what Google has:

The trip, in general

I am really enjoying being back here in SA (last time I was here was 1994) and seeing all the relatives again. The weather has been a real mixed bag, some rain, some sun.

Tomorrow Brian, my father and I are headed to Addo Elephant Park for a few days, then we back here and then off to another holiday town called Vermaaklikheid.

In Stellenbosch

Brian and I arrived in Stellenbosch yesterday morning very early. "Stupid o'clock" as Brian said. The weather here is wonderful.

In other news, apparently I am also now the ripe age of 25. Ugh.

New Advogato Features

New HTML Parser: The long-awaited libxml2 based HTML parser code is live. It needs further work but already handles most markup better than the original parser.

Keep up with the latest Advogato features by reading the Advogato status blog.
