Samba responds to the Microsoft CIFS license

The Samba team has released a response to the recent CIFS license from Microsoft. The Samba team does not need the Microsoft spec, is not using the ideas claimed by the Microsoft patents and will continue to use the GPL. It remains to be seen if Microsoft will make further moves on this matter.

Not sure why the use of a US-centric URL in the article text. Here's the generic URL without the assumption of US residence: http://samba.org/samba/ms_license.html

(although to be fair, that probably goes to the US site as a default anyway - few sites are quite as clever as CPAN about redirecting your query!)

For those of us in the UK, here's our local mirror: http://samba.mirror.ac.uk/samba/ms_license.html
